Children’s books are invaluable and offer many developmental opportunities for children. Books spark children’s imagination and stimulate curiosity, focus on their social and communication skills, emerging stronger sense of self as they develop opinions and ideas, and so much more. Once you look past the superficial elements of a story you are left with the lesson/moral that is a great discussion piece for you and your children, offering a great way to learn and teach through the wonder of colourful and fun children’s books!
The next book we are hoping you will all enjoy is actually Miss Marina’s favourite book, ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’ by Giles Andreae. This is a touching story about a giraffe named Gerald, who wants nothing more than to dance. With crooked knees and thin legs, he was really a very bad dancer… or so he thought. Just when he feels like giving up, he meets a little friend who offers him a different kind of music to dance to, Gerald starts swaying to his own tune and everyone is astounded by his great dancing skills.
With attractive rhymes and fanciful illustrations, this tale is a gentle inspiration for every child with dreams of greatness!
Questions to discuss with your children whilst reading...
1. How do you think Gerald felt at the Jungle Dance? Why?
2. Why do you think they treated him like that? How would that make you feel?
3. If we notice someone who is sad, is there anything we can do to help them?
4. How did the cricket help Gerald? What did she teach him about being different from others?
5. Differences can be viewed as unique and special. What do you think makes you unique and special?
6. Is there anything you would love to do but don’t know how? Ensure you encourage them to find their own way of fulfilling their goal/dream.
Happy Reading xx
